For her, Take Out or Delivery

For here, take out or safe delivery

I recently called one of my favorite pizza places to order a pizza. The following conversation made me wonder what exactly the qualifications are for a job at this establishment….

I will use GOP for girl on phone….

GOP: Thank you for calling (insert pizza place). Will this be for here, take out or safe delivery?

Me: Delivery please

GOP: Can you hold?

Me: Sure

GOP: (gets back on phone) Will this be for here, take out or safe delivery?

…this should have been a clue for how the rest of the conversation would go….

Me: Delivery

GOP: Can I get you phone number?

Me: ###-####

GOP: Can I get your name?

Me: Jena

GOP: Can you spell that? (Now I understand that is a reasonable question, but since I have called this place numerous times I am well aware all my information pops up on their computers)

Me: J-E-N-A

GOP: What is the address we will be delivering to?

Me: ### Santina Court

GOP: Can you spell that please?

Me: S-A-N-T-I-N-A?

GOP: Sorry, can you spell that again?

Me: S-A-N (then interrupted)

GOP: Is that S is in cat or sam (I kid you not!)

Me: (trying not to laugh) that would be S as in Sam. A as in Apple. N as in Nancy. Then TINA as in Tina.

GOP: Is that an O or an A?

Me: ugh, A…. S-A-N-T-I-N-A Court.

GOP: Santina Road

Me: Santina Court

…. At this point I am not to confident that we will even get a pizza let alone the one I am about to order….

GOP: ok, what would you like to order?

Me: Can I get a large pizza, half extra cheese.

GOP: (this is not a joke) Will that be all?

Me: No, I would like to order the other half of my pizza as well.

GOP: oh, ok

Me: For the other half I would like the gourmet veggie. (Note: VEGGIE) That is the one with the white sauce correct?

GOP: The gourmet supreme?

Me: (just in case…) What does that have on it?

GOP: Pepperoni and sausage.

Me: Um… I said veggie, no meat.

GOP: Ok so that will be there in an hour and twenty minutes. How will you be paying for this?

Me: (thinking… maybe I should have her repeat the order) Cash.

GOP: Thank you. Goodbye. “Click”

So I know that cell phone service is not always the best, but come on. I should have known how the conversation was going to go with “S as in cat?”. I am sure in the world of fast food that the education level is not set too high. Maybe there should be a spelling category in hiring…. Let’s start with the basics…. A is for apple. B is for ball. C is for cat. If you can’t make it that far in the interview process, maybe a job that requires even the least amount of spelling is not for you.

Needless to say…. The pizza arrived as promised and hour and twenty minutes later. Luke warm at best. Maybe it took her a while to write out the order while trying to search for the letters on her keyboard.

As I am currently unemployed and on the search for a new career maybe I should start out where the standards are low. I can spell cat with a C after all.
